Newport is the third largest City within Wales, located in the South East and is just 90 minutes from London by train. Newport is a vibrant, multi-cultural city steeped in a rich industrial heritage with an estimated population of 146,000.

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board covers the areas of Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport, Torfaen and South Powys. The Health Board itself employs over 13,000 staff, two thirds of whom are involved in direct patient care.  There are more than 250 consultants in a total of over 1000 hospital and general practice doctors, 6,000 nurses, midwives, allied professionals and community workers. The Boards largest hospital, Royal Gwent is located in central Newport.
 

Facts About Newport

  • Certain scenes from Captain America were filmed in Newport, near the village of Caerwent, the location for its huge World War Two battle scenes
  • The city has played host to TV shows like Doctor Who and Torchwood, not to mention 2006 black comedy Big Nothing, starring Friends’ heartthrob David Schwimmer and Shaun Of The Dead’s Simon Pegg.
  • Harry Houdini, the most famous magician who ever slipped free of a straight jacket, chose Newport as the City to kick off his very first international tour of death defying stunts in 1905
  • The Newport Transporter Bridge is one of only six operational transporter bridges in the world.

Education in Newport

Newport is also home to the City Campus of the University of South Wales. The University is home to a wide range of subject areas with huge student’s union facilities and study space, with more developments to come.
 

Things to do in Newport:

Tredegar House
Tredegar House is one of the architectural wonders of Wales and one of the most significant late 17th-century houses in the whole of the British Isles. Situated within 90 acres of beautiful gardens and parkland, this delightful red brick house provides an ideal setting for a fantastic day out. For more than 500 years the house was home to one of the greatest Welsh families, the Morgans, later Lords Tredegar.

Shopping
Shopping in Newport is centred around Friars Walk, Commercial Street, the Kingsway Centre and Newport Market, where you will find high street names, local independent retailers, traders, cafes and coffee shops. Friars Walk is a partially under-cover shopping centre and leisure complex in Newport city centre, South Wales. It has several levels and includes a range of high street shops, eateries, a cinema, a bowling alley and a soft play area.

The Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre

The Riverfront is at the heart of the arts and entertainment scene in Newport. It is Newport's only professional presenting theatre and arts centre and has two theatre spaces, visual art gallery spaces, dance studio, recording studio, workshop rooms, conference room and licensed cafe. Newport Museum and Art Gallery

The history of Newport is surprisingly fascinating. Its story is told within this most unassuming building. As well as being a museum, it is also an art gallery housing an extensive collection of classical and contemporary art including the works of several extremely well-known Welsh painters.

Caerleon Roman Fortress Baths
The Caerleon Roman Fortress and Baths museum is a historical site located in the town of Caerleon in Newport. There are computer interactives, hands-on activities for children and a video presentation to bring these fascinating remains to life. See the cold and warm baths, exercise rooms and more. Here you are also able to explore the remains of the legionary fortress and Caerleon Amphitheatre.
