A Snapshot Into ... Weston-super-Mare

Weston-Super-Mare, also known as Weston, is a seaside town in Somerset, England. It is part of the unitary authority of North Somerset. It lies by the Bristol Channel 18 miles south west of Bristol between Worlebury Hill and Bleadon Hill. With a typical seaside atmosphere, there’s an abundance of things to do in Weston-Super-Mare dotted all across the shorefront.
University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) is a newly merged Trust comprising University Hospital Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and Weston Area Health NHS Trust. The new Trust, which employs over 13,000 people, provides over 100 different clinical services across ten different sites to a core population of more than 500,000 people. Joining forces gives them an exciting opportunity to take everything that is great about Weston and UH Bristol and turn it into something even better, a beacon for quality teaching, research, and innovation.
Facts about Weston-Super-Mare
- The 'super' part of Weston-super-Mare is medieval Latin. Super means on or above, and mare is Latin for sea.
- The Severn Estuary has one of the largest tidal ranges in the world, second only to the Bay of Fundi in Canada.
- During the 19th century Weston grew from a tiny village of about 100 or so inhabitants to a thriving Victorian seaside resort of nearly 20,000 people.
- According to the 2011 census the population of the seaside town was 76,143.

Education in Weston-super-Mare

Weston College is a general college of further and higher education in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, England. It provides education and vocational training from age 14 to adult. The college provided education to approximately 30,000 enrolled learners. In addition, The University of Bristol is a 50-minute car journey from Weston and is a red brick research university. It received its royal charter in 1909, although it can trace its roots to a Merchant Venturers' school founded in 1595 and University College, Bristol, which had been in existence since 1876.
Things to do in Weston-super-Mare:
The Grand Pier
The Grand Pier is easily Weston-Super-Mare’s most memorable spot in the town. There is a small roller coaster to be enjoyed as well as a Formula One simulator! The indoor theme park has hundreds of amusements on offer and the best indoor play in Weston-super-Mare; with restaurants and cafés serving delicious food and a whole host of events.
Beach Trip
Weston-super-mare beach is a vast area of seaside that harbors quiet water perfect for swimming.
Steep Holme Island
Just off the shore of Weston, Steep Holm Island is really easy to visit by boat from the area around Marine Lake in the town. The island is uninhabited so remember to bring all the foods, snacks and water for your trip on the island.
The Weston Museum
The Weston Museum exhibits start from prehistoric times and make their way to the present day. They offer a different view of Weston and what’s more it is interactive and free to visit.
The Helicopter Museum
The Helicopter Museum is the home of the largest collection of historic helicopters in the world and is located in the heart of Weston!
