GMC Registration for Medicine Doctors

There is currently a huge shortage of doctors across all medicine areas in the UK, particularly at senior and Consultant levels. If you are currently practising internationally and have completed all parts of your MRCP qualification then you have already taken a huge step towards working in the UK. This is why so many MRCP qualified doctors choose the UK as their destination of choice for their international practice. This article aims to share more information about the GMC itself, the requirements to join and the application process.

What is the GMC?

The GMC is the independent regulator for doctors in the UK. The focus today is the same as when they started – to protect patients.

The statutory purpose of the GMC is set out by the Medical Act 1983 and cover 5 key areas:

  1. The Medical Register
  2. Standards for Doctors
  3. Education and Training
  4. Revalidation
  5. Addressing Concerns

Why register with the GMC?

One of the key reasons many international doctors choose to sit the MRCP qualification is to enable them a route of access to the GMC and the ability to work as a doctor in the NHS. The GMC is a mandatory registration for doctors who wish to work in the NHS and is home to more than 340,000 registered doctors in the UK. In order to practise as a doctor in the NHS you will need full registration with your licence to practise.

Requirements to join the GMC?

For the purpose of this blog we are describing the route of entry for an international doctor coming from outside of the European Union. If this doesn’t quite fit with your current circumstances then please feel free to email [email protected] and we’ll be able to advise on the best course of action.

In order to register you will need to provide all of the following:

  • Evidence of your primary medical qualification
  • Your postgraduate qualification (this is your MRCP)
  • Proof of your English Language capability
  • Your Passport
  • Certificates of Good Standing from current and previous medical councils
  • Evidence of your activity for the last 5 years

Your qualifications will need to be verified by ECFMG through their EPIC service and international documents may require translating

How to apply?

You will need to make your application to join the register on the GMC website by creating an account and following their application process. Once complete, you will receive an email informing you what evidence you will need to provide. This can then be emailed across and should be compiled in to one single PDF. You will get a response within 5 working days either confirming your application and inviting you to ID check or requesting any further evidence that is required. The final step for completing your registration is to attend a GMC ID Check within 6 months of receiving your invitation.

How much does it cost?

Fees are regularly updated on the following website and vary depending on the type of registration that you are looking for. Discounts are also available to newly qualified doctors joining the register.
