The GMC ID check

  • November 11, 2020

Once you have submitted your documentation and qualifications to the GMC, they will then go ahead and review your application for registration with a licence to practice. If your application is accepted, the last stage of the process is to attend a GMC ID check.

You can attend your ID check in either the London or Manchester offices.

In this post, we share what you can expect when you attend a General Medical Council ID check.

What documents do I need to bring with me to my ID check?

When the GMC emails you inviting you to your ID check, they may also provide you with a list of original documentation to bring along with you.

When you hand your documents over at the ID check, photocopies will be made and then they will return the originals back to you.

What will happen at my ID check, will I need to do anything?

During your ID check, the officer will:

  • Take your documents for a photo copy
  • Take your photograph
  • Ask for your signature to keep on your account
  • Take your passport or BRP details

The GMC will then share your photograph and signature with your employer, so, they can be assured you are GMC Registered when you start to work for them.

Is it compulsory that I attend an ID check?

In normal circumstances you would have three months to attend your ID check after your application has been approved. However at current due to the Covid pandemic and social distancing measures, you now have 6 months. If you do not attend your ID check within this time period, you will have to complete a new application and you will incur another application fee (£399).

Please do not book an ID check if you have not been invited by the GMC to do so.

If I did my ID check at my PLAB 2 exam, do I need to do it for a second time?

If you completed your ID check at your PLAB 2 exam, you will NOT need to attend another ID check.
