The Benefits of having a Royal College Membership

The Royal Colleges provides support to doctors at all levels. Each Royal College offers a range of member services specifically tailored for specialty trainees and Consultant physicians, to help you grow and develop throughout your career.

Having a collegiate membership will allow you to network with other members, get involved in healthcare policy, submit articles to their peer-reviewed journals, undertake their educational courses and attend a wide range of conferences.

If you are a medical student or qualified international physician who is yet to pass the relevant Royal College qualification, you could be eligible for associate membership.

In this blog post, we share the three main advantages of being a Member of a Royal College: knowledge, skills and development and support.


With regular developments in medicine, staying up to date is key which is why each Royal College will provide you with a range of resources to support your learning and development, including:

  • Access to popular publications and key sources of professional information

Skills and development

Royal College’s understand that professional development and learning new skills is a key part of your role within the NHS.

As a member of the Royal College, you can:

  • Use their library and museum services including literature search and access to specimens
  • Apply for research fellowships, supporting your innovative developments
  • Access leadership and development opportunities
  • Discount on courses to help you develop, including specialty training and preparing for your fellowship exams
  • Continually develop through their new and updated standards and guidance


Each Royal College will provide careers advice, support and access to new opportunities will help you drive your career forward with:

  • Financial support via bursaries and awards
  • Careers advice, case studies and resources, both online and at events
  • A dedicated regional network, providing you with key contacts in your region
  • Opportunities to take up national and regional roles, from teaching and volunteering to standing for Council
  • Royal College post-nominals, demonstrating your commitment to the profession and inclusion in their online public register of members
  • Confidential support and advice signposting service, including a telephone helpline to discuss issues of concern with a peer

Who is eligible for Royal College membership?

If you are a qualified international physician who has passed the Royal College qualification, you will be eligible for collegiate membership.
