UK weather and how to prepare

  • September 14, 2022

The climate in the UK is moderate. This often means that Britain experiences warm and sunny summers and cool, damp winters. Extremes of heat or cold, drought, or wind are uncommon compared to other climates. The weather is also quite unpredictable.

Does the weather vary in different regions?

Not all parts of the UK have the same climate. London, in the south-east of the UK, is a region characterised by a warm and dry climate in the summer and a cold and dry climate in the winter.

Cumbria, in the mountainous north-west of England, has generally cooler temperatures and more rainfall throughout the year.

The general pattern of the climate across the UK has four distinct regions:

south-east – cold winters, warm and dry summers

south-west – mild and wet winters, warm and wet summers

north-west – mild winter, cool summers and can get rain all year

north-east – cold winter, cool summers and can get rain all year

The science behind the UKs varying weather conditions

The UK lies in the 'battleground' between warm tropical air to the south and cold polar air to the north. As two distinctly different types of air battle for control over the mid-latitudes, the UK experiences contrasting and changeable weather.

Living In the UK all year round will mean you are likely to experience all kinds of weather conditions. Families can sledge in the snow during the winter in some parts of the UK and bask in the beautiful sun during the summer.

Clothing recommendations

If you are planning on staying here all year round you are likely to need to have a variety of clothing so that you can stay comfortable all year round. Make sure you have a warm winter coat to keep you dry in the winter put don’t forget to pack your sunglasses and flipflops for the August heat!
