Applying for positions, attending NHS interviews and then getting an offer! All of these stages can be overwhelming as well as exciting! The move to the UK will also feel this way. In order to make your transition as smooth as possible we have outlined things to consider when finding your new home here in the UK. Sorting short term accommodation for yourself is the first thing our relocation officers will advise you to do when relocating to the UK. Below we discuss why this is so important and how it will grant you a positive start to your new venture.
Give yourself time to view properties in person
Landlords in the UK will want to meet you in person before agreeing to rent out their properties. This is standard practice in the UK and has benefits for yourself as well as the landlord.
You will want to give yourself time to see the properties available in person. Things can look very different online so even if a landlord is prepared to let you rent before viewing (which is extremely unlikely) you should view in in person anyway to avoid disappointment.
Get to know the areas, could you commute?
Once you are here in temporary accommodation for 3/4 weeks, you can explore the area you will be living and working in. In this time, you are likely to discover your new favourite places! Armed with that information you will then be able to make an executive decision about where you and your family will be most happy. You will also be able to visit the hospital you are due to join and practice your commute! Doing this whilst in temporary accommodation will give you time to figure out your commute to work before committing to a new home.
May need proof of employment / employment reference
It is not uncommon for NHS Trusts to only provide you with proof of employment once you are here in the UK. Such references are normally a routine requirement from estate agents for long-term rentals. Therefore, by finding your long-term rental once you are here will give you more options as you won’t have to limit yourself to landlord that don’t request an employment reference.
